Former Premier League star opens up about mental health battles and suicide attempt

Former Premier League star Marvin Sordell has opened up about his battle with mental health that led to his retirement from professional football.

The former Watford and Bolton forward called time on his career at the age of 28 last season despite having a year left on his contract at Burton Albion.

Sordell was speaking on Good Morning Britain ahead of tonight's Football, Prince William and Our Mental Health on BBC One where he can be seen discussing parenting with the Duke of Cambridge.

Speaking with GMB hosts Ben Shephard and Ranvir Singh the 29-year-old opened up about his experiences within the professional game - as shown in the video above.

"I think for me it was a combination of my personal experiences, a lot of what I'd experienced in life," he explained.

"A lot of the pressure that I faced having moved away from the environment at Watford I had, playing in the Championship, being a young player, to then going into a big Premier League club at Bolton.

"The transfer fee hanging over my head and the expectancy of what I needed to deliver, I found it difficult to deal with, being away from home and not having a support network directly around me made it equally as tough."

The conversation moved on to Sordell's suicide attempt, something the former England U21 player was keen to see as a positive.

"I've been very open about that experience and my whole experience with depression and a suicide attempt as well," he said.

"I think it's very important to see that you can overcome it, you can get to a better place. I was in a very, very dark place and a deep hole, where I am in life today I'm a very happy person.

Ex-footballer, Marvin Sordell, talks to Prince William about parenting and mental health

"Every time I have this discussion I say 'that negative experience, that whole period of time in my life kicked off a sequence of events kicked off a sequence of events that have led to me becoming a lot happier and have led to a lot of positive things in my life.'

"So you know it was a dark cloud but there was a massive silver lining."

Football, Prince William and Our Mental Health airs tonight on BBC One at 8:05pm.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am.
