Former Premier League star explains why Son on Andre Gomes was not an 'innocent challenge'

Former Premier League goalkeeper Shaka Hislop has said Son Heung-min has to take responsibility for his tackle that led to the injury of Andre Gomes.

Hislop made over 200 appearances in the Premier League for Newcastle United, Portsmouth and West Ham but now works as a pundit for ESPN.

The former goalkeeper said while he did not think Son meant to injure the Everton midfielder, he was fired up and looking to leave a mark.

"I don't think there's any intent from Son to cause that kind of damage, I don't think there's any question," said Hislop.

"I do think Son was trying to leave a little bit as players say on Gomes and as a result, the consequence I think he has to bear a responsibility for.

"If it was just an innocent challenge...he got elbowed early on in the game, and then as a result I think Son is trying to leave a little bit on Gomes, obviously not trying to break his leg in that manner which is why I think Son has to bear a responsibility."

Referee Martin Atkinson sent Son off after originally taking a yellow card out of his pocket.

Tottenham have confirmed they will be appealing the midfielder's red card.

Son was left in tears after seeing the damage of his tackle and had to be consoled by his teammates and Everton's captain Seamus Coleman.

Yesterday, Everton confirmed Gomes' surgery went "extremely well" after the midfielder underwent a procedure on a fracture dislocation to his right ankle.
