Former Premier League refereeing chief explains VAR error which cost Liverpool win over Everton

Former Premier League referee Keith Hackett has insisted Liverpool's late winner against Everton should not have been ruled out.

VAR was once again in the headline after Jordan Henderson's stoppage-time goal was ruled out of offside in the build-up.

Still replays suggested that Sadio Mane was level with the Everton backline to the naked eye but VAR instead deemed the Liverpool attacker offside and thus, the goal was ruled out.

It was the final controversy in a frantic Merseyside derby that saw Jordan Pickford's first-half tackle on Virgil van Dijk go unpunished despite the use of technology at Goodison Park.

The Dutch defender was then forced off from the injury sustained by that challenge, with the Liverpool 1-0 up thanks to Mane's opener.

Michael Keane levelled the score before Mohamed Salah put Liverpool ahead again, only for Dominic Calvert-Lewin to restore parity.

Then came Henderson's disallowed goal just before Richarlison was sent off as the match finished 2-2.

Ex Premier League referee and former Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) chief Hackett believes that VAR shouldn't have disallowed the goal, which would have handed Liverpool all three points.

“It’s not offside for me," he told Caught Offside.

"The hand/arm up to the underside of the armpit is not a part of the body that can score.

"My view is that this goal should not have been ruled out.

“The cameras have speeds of up to 50 frames per second, so they do not have the level of accuracy to make this judgement.”

“It’s a poor decision.”

Equally, BT Sport's referee correspondent, Peter Walton believes Jordan Pickford should have been sent off for his challenge on Van Dijk.

"It’s two stages really. First of all, they look at the offside. When we saw the offside pictures it looks as if he was offside to begin with," he told BT Sport.

"However, when we freeze the frames we’ll see Van Dijk is just being played offside as he goes through there. It’s being drawn from the new interpretation of the armpit.

"The foul from Pickford is still relevant because even though the whistle may have gone, the game stopped, players are still accountable for their actions and the VAR will have looked at that to see if there was a point of serious foul play happening.

"Personally, I think it was serious foul play and I think Pickford was a lucky player not to have been sent off for that particular challenge."
