Former Premier League referee delivers verdict on Crystal Palace's disallowed goal vs Liverpool

James Tomkins' disallowed goal for Crystal Palace against Liverpool on Saturday was correctly ruled out.

That's the verdict of former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher, who has analysed the incident that led to the goal being disallowed, as a check by the video assistant referee overturned the original decision for the goal to stand.

The reason for the goal being disallowed was for a perceived foul on Dejan Lovren by Palace striker Jordan Ayew as the free kick came in, and Gallagher said that was the correct decision.

"When you see one angle, I cannot see anything other than it being given as a foul," he said, speaking as part of Sky Sports' ref watch feature.

"If I come in here on a Monday and that has not been given, you will say to me: 'How is this not a foul?' There is physical contact and there are fouls and when the VAR sees that, I think it is very difficult not to give a foul."

The incident occurred in the first half of the game at Selhurst Park, with the game goalless at the time.

Liverpool went on to win the game, with goals from Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino helping the Premier League leaders to victory, despite Wilfried Zaha equalising for Palace with less than ten minutes to go.
