Former Premier League referee delivers VAR verdict over Jamal Lascelles' challenge on Harry Kane

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has revealed he thinks VAR made the right decision not to award a penalty for Jamaal Lascelles' challenge on Harry Kane.

Newcastle United beat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 away from home on Sunday to earn a first Premier League win of the season.

Joelinton's first-half strike inflicted the damage and ensured the Magpies came away with a first win under Steve Bruce.

However, there was huge controversy in the second half as Kane was brought down by Lascelles in the area.

Referee Mike Dean waved away the claims and VAR did not overrule his decision, which sparked mass debate on social media.

The general consensus amongst former players, fans and the media is that Kane should have definitely been awarded a penalty by VAR.

The rules state that VAR will only intervene if it deems the official has made a 'clear and obvious' error.

The tolerance level on these decisions is high, in a bid to avoid VAR re-refereeing matches.

Gallagher, who refereed over 250 Premier League matches, believe this was the right decision, as the challenge on Kane did not meet the 'clear and obvious' threshold.

Speaking on Sky Sports Ref Watch, he explained: "My initial reaction when I saw that incident was, penalty.

"When I've seen it from the other side, I'm not so sure. I think it sparked lots of debate and I wonder if Kane actually, the ball goes to the right, he sees Lascelles come and he steps into him.

"I'm not convinced, I think a lot of people weren't convinced and I can understand why VAR can't overturn it.

"I don't think it is [a penalty] now, I did at the time.

"As I said, I thought it was a penalty but now I'm not convinced. It's because of that doubt, the VAR can't intervene, as we saw last Wednesday."
