Former Premier League referee blasts VAR as 'total embarrassment' after poor decisions

Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey has blasted VAR as 'a total embarrassment' after more poor decisions from the review system.

VAR caused controversy again this weekend - most notably in Manchester United's 1-1 draw with Liverpool , with Jurgen Klopp furious after Marcus Rashord's goal was allowed to stand despite an apparent foul on Divock Origi in the build-up to the goal.

To compound Liverpool's anger, they were on the wrong side of a VAR decision after Sadio Mane was adjudged to have handballed before firing home what he thought was an equaliser.

The day before, Liverpool's title rivals Manchester City were claiming a penalty when Kevin de Bruyne went down under a challenge from Wilfried Zaha, but VAR did not overrule the on-field decision on the referee.

And City were undone earlier in the season when Gabriel Jesus thought he had scored a winner against Tottenham , only for his effort to be ruled as the ball had hit Aymeric Laporte's arm on the way to him.

Halsey said VAR was being used successfully in the Champions League and in international matches, but not in the Premier League.

He insisted that the problem is referees are not reviewing their own decisions as VAR officials appear to be reluctant to overturn them.

"VAR has become a total embarrassment to the Premier League," said Halsey, writing for the Sun .

"As per protocol from football lawmakers Ifab, Premier League referees MUST start viewing the pitchside monitors.

"Instead, officials at Stockley Park are deciding whether to overrule colleagues’ on-field decisions, which they are clearly reluctant to do."

Halsey said he felt decisions at Tottenham and Crystal Palace this weekend would have been overturned this weekend if referees were reviewing the replays.

He said VAR officials were not to blame for the poor decisions - insisting that change had to come from management level in terms of implementing how VAR should be used.
