Former Premier League referee agrees with Thomas Tuchel on controversial Chelsea incident

Chelsea bounced back to winning ways on Saturday afternoon as goals from Trevoh Chalobah, Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell earned Thomas Tuchel's side a 3-1 win against Southampton.

Things could have been made more comfortable for them, however, had a goal from Werner in the first half not been controversially ruled out for a foul by Cesar Azpilicueta.

While the clash could potentially be deemed a foul on review, frustration came from the stands at Stamford Bridge and from fans at home with how long before the goal the incident took place.

Upon review, nearly 20 seconds had elapsed between Azpilicueta's challenge on Kyle Walker-Peters and Werner heading home Callum Hudson-Odoi's cross.

Tuchel was frustrated with the decision to disallow a Werner goal via VAR.

He said: “We have talks here before the season. Everybody tells me in English football we will not whistle soft touches. And now we’re here in the middle of London, it’s raining, we have an intensive match and then it’s not even directly after the situation that there is a goal.

“There’s a chance, there’s a second chance and then there’s a third cross which leads to the goal.

“So, if we go back, this [situation] is not a decisive action for this goal. I have absolutely zero understanding why we go back to this situation and take the goal away.”

On Monday morning, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher agreed with the Blues point of view, saying that the review should not have gone as far back as it did.

"The feeling is, Southampton couldn't reset," Gallagher said when explaining the decision-making on Sky Sports News.

"It went on a long time, I was surprised it went back that far. I think it took a long time. There was 18 seconds between the foul and the ball going in the net, six Chelsea players touched the ball and one Southampton player.

"So it went back to a subjective decision by the VAR to say to the referee that you've got to go back and have a look."

Nevertheless, the Blues responded well to James Ward-Prowse's equaliser and collected all three points following the midfielder's red card for a foul on Jorginho.

It left the club top of the table by a point heading into the international break with a trip Brentford on the cards when top-flight action resumes.
