Former Premier League official doubles down on Leeds United VAR decision against Tottenham

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher believes VAR was right not to overrule Tottenham's penalty against Leeds United.

The Whites found themselves 2-0 down at half time against Spurs after goals from Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son.

The first goal was hotly debated by Leeds, as they felt Ezgjan Alioski's challenge on Steven Bergwijn was outside the area.

On review, VAR deemed that there was contact on the line of the penalty area, which constitutes a foul inside the box.

Replays showed that part of Bergwijn's body was partly inside the area but the initial contact appeared to be on the Dutchman's thigh, which had not yet entered the 18-yard box.

Kane dispatched the resulting spot-kick, before turning provider for Son to double the advantage just before the break, leaving Leeds feeling hard done to.

On the penalty decision, Gallagher claimed that VAR reached the correct decision.

“Well, it’s a bit like a forward being in the offside position. Part of his body is inside the area," he told Sky Sports Ref Watch.

“He’s fouled, the referee gives a penalty. The line belongs to the goalkeeper therefore it’s a penalty."

After arguments from Steven Warnock and Sue Smith in the studio, he added: “I think, because Bergwijn, because some of his body is in the area and some isn’t that’s why it’s given.”

Toby Alderweireld then headed home a third for Tottenham after half time to put an end to the contest and end Spurs' four-match winless run.

For Leeds, it signalled a second defeat in five matches and the end of their two-game clean sheet run.

Marcelo Bielsa's side will hope to bounce back against Crawley Town in the FA Cup third round, which will be shown live on BBC 1 on Sunday.
