Police officer guilty of baby son's manslaughter

Colin Randall was originally charged with murder.

A senior constable from the Brisbane region has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of his two-month-old son.

Colin David Randall was charged with murder in 2016, 18 months after the boy suffered significant injuries at a home in Victoria Point on Brisbane's bayside.

The charges came after a year-long joint investigation by the Queensland police State Crime Command, child protection unit, Ethical Standards Command and the Crime and Corruption Commission.

The officer was suspended on full pay a month after his son's death.

He is expected to be formally discharged from the Queensland Police Service.

Mr Randall pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter in the Brisbane Supreme Court on Friday morning.

He is expected to be sentenced next Tuesday.

Prosecutor Phil McCarthy told Justice Peter Davis the case of Heidi Strbak, who was found guilty of her young son's manslaughter in 2017, was comparable to the Randall case.

Strbak was sentenced to nine years in jail over the death of Tyrell Cobb, but could be released on parole after serving less than half that period.

She is appealing the sentence.
