Former Penn State WR is one UDFA to watch for the Commanders

While the Washington Commanders have one of the NFL’s better groups of wide receivers, they could add new names to the mix for 2023.

Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel, Jahan Dotson and Dyami Brown are roster locks for 2023. However, with longtime special-teams stalwart Cam Sims now in Las Vegas, the Commanders have an opening or two at wide receiver for 2023.

Washington often carries at least six wide receivers, meaning at least two spots could be up for grabs this summer. Two early names that come to mind for the Commanders are undrafted free agents Mitchell Tinsley [Penn State] and Kazmeir Allen [UCLA]. Allen has already made an impression on head coach Ron Rivera and could replace Dax Milne as Washington’s primary return man.

That brings us to Tinsley. Before transferring to Penn State in 2022, where he replaced Dotson in the lineup for the Nittany Lions, Tinsley was a star wideout for Bailey Zappe at Western Kentucky. Tinsley caught 87 passes for 1,402 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2021.

Tinsley does everything well and could endear himself to Washington’s coaches. Ryan Fowler of The Draft Network believes Tinsley can challenge for a roster spot as a rookie.

Nick Baumgardner of The Athletic recently named one undrafted free agent to watch for all 32 NFL teams and named Tinsley for the Commanders.

Tinsley blew up with Zappe at Western Kentucky in 2021 (1,402 yards, 14 touchdowns) and turned that into a Penn State offer. He wound up leading the Nittany Lions last season with 51 receptions as a dependable slot.

The wide receiver room could be competitive this summer in Washington, and Tinsley is a name to watch for the Commanders.
