Former Partick and Dundee striker Gary Harkins in talks with Gartcairn

Gary Harkins could be set for a shock move to Gartcairn Juniors after gaffer Willie Kinniburgh confirmed he has approached the former Dundee and Partick Thistle striker.

The 35-year-old was at Stenhousemuir last season and his signing would be a real coup for the West of Scotland Conference B side, who play in the seventh tier of Scottish football.

Ex-Motherwell defender Kinniburgh was Harkins' team-mate at Partick Thistle between 2007-2009 and the pair could be reunited at the Airdrie outfit.

Kinniburgh told Lanarkshire Live Sport: "I've known Gary for a long time and played with him at Partick, so I've spoken to him and we are trying to speak to a lot of boys at the moment.

"Big Gary is a smashing player and he's someone we are keen on getting on board."

Kinniburgh, who became a police officer after hanging up his boots five years ago, hinted Harkins could be put on the path to a future career as part of the move.

The 35-year-old added: "Boys are now looking towards their future and once you hit your 30s, you know that you've only got a certain amount of time left playing and you need to look at what you are doing after football.

"If you can go to a club and there's wee perks there, there's maybe committee members, or supporters who can put you on the right path to a career then that's something every player at any level in Scotland out with the top teams will be looking to get on.

"It certainly was something I looked at when I was at Thistle, when I got the opportunity to join the police.

"You think: I can stay full-time for a few more years, or I can go and get a career for the rest of my life."
