Former NFL running back Cedric Benson, who played in five games with the Green Bay Packers during the 2012 season, died Saturday night in a motorcycle accident in Texas.
CBS News in Austin reported that a motorcycle crashed into a minivan around 10:22 p.m. Saturday night. Both occupants of the motorcycle were declared dead on the scene.
KVUE, ABC’s affiliate in Austin, confirmed Benson was one of the two people killed in the crash.
Benson was only 36 years old.
A star at the University of Texas and the fourth overall pick in the 2005 draft, Benson played eight NFL seasons, rushing 1,600 times for 6,017 yards and 32 touchdowns over 96 games. He spent three seasons with the Chicago Bears, four with the Cincinnati Bengals and one with the Packers.
In Green Bay in 2012, Benson rushed 71 times for 248 yards and one touchdown before suffering a season-ending Lisfranc injury after only five games. His one-year deal with the Packers expired following the 2012 season, and Benson didn’t play again in the NFL.
