Former Green Bay Packers assistant coach Winston Moss is expected to be named the new head coach and general manager of the XFL team in Los Angeles on Tuesday, according to Arash Markazi of the Los Angeles Times.
Moss, 53, spent 13 seasons with the Packers coaching linebackers. He also served as the associate head coach under Mike McCarthy, who brought Moss with him to Green Bay from New Orleans in 2006.
Interim head coach Joe Philbin relieved Moss of his duties just two days after McCarthy was fired last December. Many believed a tweet he sent about Aaron Rodgers and the Packers forced Philbin’s hand, although Moss claimed the statement was directed at the fans and not the team.
Although he never secured a head-coaching job in the NFL, Moss interviewed for several openings around the league and aspired to lead a franchise. He’ll get that chance in the new XFL, which begins play in 2020.
Moss will give the new franchise in Los Angeles an experienced former player and coach. He played in 169 games over 11 years in the NFL and was a coach in the league for 19 of the last 20 seasons.
Moss, a native of Miami, spent four years in Los Angeles playing for the Raiders in the early 1990s.
