Former Operation Yewtree officer to appear on Big Brother

A police officer who worked on the Operation Yewtree investigation into Jimmy Savile is to appear on Big Brother.

The officer who is understood to be low-ranking, retired from the Metropolitan police two weeks ago.

Scotland Yard refused to comment on the officer's decision to appear in Channel 5 programme.

But it is understood that the officer has been selected for the programme because of his closeness to the inquiry.

The officer is understood to be a 33-year-old former detective constable who was engaged in the searches of suspects' premises in the inquiry.

Pete Saunders, of the National Association for People Abused in Childhood, said: "This is not going to be helpful for the survivors of abuse.

"People have poured their hearts out to the police and to see someone using the name of this operation to go on this programme is not appropriate."

All police officers have to sign the Official Secrets Act (OSA) before being employed so the officer is not allowed to give details of operations he has been involved in.

Officers are also made to sign the OSA when they retire or resign.
