An Olympic coach accused of raping and sexually assaulting a child has appeared in court.
Jose Vicente Leiva-Modahl, 65, who also goes by Vicente Modahl, has been accused of a number of sex offences, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said.
The Norwegian national and the husband of former Commonwealth Games 800m champion Diane Modahl, has been charged with 19 offences by the CPS. The charges relate to alleged offences against one woman between 2012 and 2024.
On Tuesday, Modahl appeared from custody at Manchester Magistrates' Court for a 15-minute hearing in which no pleas were indicated.
District Judge Richard Jepson told him some of the allegations were too serious to be dealt with at the magistrates' court and he sent the case to Manchester Crown Court.
Modahl was granted conditional bail ahead of a plea and trial preparation hearing on November 18. Among his bail conditions were to reside at an address in the Warrington area, to abide by an electronic monitoring curfew from 9pm to 7am and not to contact witnesses in the case.
Modahl, who was arrested at an airport as he returned to the UK from Spain, must also not apply for any travel documents through British, Norwegian or Spanish authorities, and was also ordered to surrender his Spanish passport. He was also told not to have any unsupervised contact with anyone under the age of 18 as part of his bail conditions.
The court heard that the defendant has been suspended by the governing body UK Athletics.
Modahl has been charged with five counts of sexual assault on a child; two counts of sexual assault on a female; two counts of causing a child to engage in sexual activity; one count of causing a female to engage in sexual activity; two counts of rape of a child; two counts of rape of a female; two counts of assault by penetration of a child; two counts of assault by penetration of a female and one count of controlling and coercive behaviour.
None of the details of the alleged offences were outlined in court on Tuesday.
