Former Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins will get his first start Sunday against the Bills

Former Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins is about to realize his childhood dreams Sunday. Of course getting drafted in the first round is more than a good start, but now, according to interim head coach Bill Callahan, he will get his first NFL start when the Redskins travel to Buffalo.

But it wasn’t all roses and chocolates when talking about the No. 15 overall pick. It’s no secret at this point that fired coach Jay Gruden didn’t want to draft Haskins, but the team still sees him as the future. It also believes he still has plenty to learn and work through.

“In some respects, I think he needs a little bit more work,” Callahan said. “Time is invaluable where he can sit back and learn from quarterbacks like Case and Colt as well as players like Alex who is around the building. It is a fine line. We are trying to win games still.”

And then there’s this — If starter Case Keenum were not in concussion protocol, he would still be the starter. But for Haskins, the fact that the Redskins’ organization is making this move when it still has Colt McCoy listed as the backup is a nod in his direction.

Now it’s about Haskins preparing the best he can, embrace the opportunity and deliver when called upon. It’s the same thing Callahan sees too.

“Like I keep saying, it’s a privilege,” Callahan said. “It’s not a right. Our players are of the understanding that when their moment is called, they’ve got to deliver and it’s a production business for me — for anybody. We all have to take that accountability seriously and produce when the time is called.”

Washington and Buffalo are all set to kick off at 1:00 PM.
