Former Ohio State QB Matthew Baldwin denied immediate eligibility by NCAA

Former Ohio State quarterback Matthew Baldwin likely thought he had a good shot at getting an exception to the undergraduate transfer rule of sitting out a year when he made the decision to transfer to TCU. Especially after seeing things up close and personal with guys within the Ohio State program.

After all, both Justin Fields and Tate Martell won their respective battles as undergraduates and are currently competing for a starting spot at Ohio State and at Miami.

But according to news Thursday, that’s not how things worked out. Instead Baldwin has been denied an immediate eligibility waiver by the NCAA according to an initial report by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

It’s a polarizing topic for many reasons, and hardly anyone can seem to figure out how all this transfer business works — including the NCAA. A lack of transparency (sometimes for good reason), changing rules, and an influx of more and more undergraduate transfers thanks to the blockbuster hit known as the transfer portal are all to blame.

It’s a tough nut to crack, and there doesn’t seem to be a good solution on the table in regards to how to move forward with all of this. It doesn’t appear as though Baldwin is done with the good fight either. According to multiple sources, an appeal of the decision is expected.

Who knows how this will end, but we’ll continue to stay close to it as more information becomes available.
