Former Ohio State QB Joe Burrow now leading Heisman Watch, Fields fourth

The Heisman race is getting very, very interesting at least according to one poll administered by USA TODAY. It’s “Heisman Watch” piece polls 21-members of the network who are actual Heisman voters on their top three each and every week.

And while Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts and Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa had been going 1-2 over the last few weeks, they are now starting to get stiff-armed and elbowed out of the way by former Ohio State and current LSU quarterback Joe Burrow.

And for good reason. Burrow has made an LSU offense that’s struggled over the last few years a much, much more dangerous unit. He’s thrown for almost 2,500 yards so far in 2019, has completed nearly 80% of his passes (are you kidding me), and thrown 29 touchdowns to just three interceptions.

I say, it all makes sense. Give the kid credit. Boy, the transfer portal sure has worm-holed some stunning offensive players in 2019.

On that note, Justin Fields has made a wee-bit of a move up the poll. He’s now sitting at fourth — albeit a very, very distant fourth behind the trio of Burrow, Hurts and Tagovailoa. He has just six points total compared to Burrow (48), Hurts (47), and Tagovailoa (23). The Ohio State quarterback has now leapfrogged Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor though, who has just one point total. To round out the poll, welcome back Chase Young with a vote as well.

This thing still has a long way to go, and Fields will get his first real shot at making his way towards the other three quarterbacks ahead of him at Noon on Saturday. Look fantastic against the nation’s top defense and the narrative may begin to change.
