Former Ohio State forward Alonzo Gaffney finds new home

Highly touted forward Alonzo Gaffney came to Ohio State in the fall of 2019 but decided Columbus wasn’t the place for him after only a year. Gaffney transferred to Northwest Florida Junior College and most thought he would turn pro after that, but the 6-foot, 9-inch forward had other ideas.

Instead, Gaffney has decided to head to the desert and play for Bobby Hurley at Arizona State.

While a freshman with the Buckeyes, Gaffney averaged less than two points per game and close to seven minutes in each of 17 games played in scarlet and gray. At Northwest Florida, Gaffney’s numbers improved as he played in 21 games and averaged 8.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.

How will Gaffney’s game translate from junior college to the Pac-12? Only time will tell, but he will be playing with a familiar face. Former Ohio State guard Luther Muhammad transferred to ASU last season but spent the year as a redshirt.

Arizona State went 11-14 last season and hopes its new additions from the Buckeye state will lead to better days ahead.
