Former Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano to step down from Patriots staff

Well, that didn’t last long.

News broke back in early February that former Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano — who wasn’t retained by Ryan Day — had accepted the same post with the New England Patriots, though it was never made official.

Now, less than two months later, Schiano has decided to step down according to a joint statement released by both he and head coach Bill Belichick.

Statement from Greg Schiano:
“I have informed Mr. Kraft and Coach Belichick that I am stepping down from my position at the Patriots. This is not the result of any one event, but rather a realization that I need to spend more time on my faith and family. I don’t want to look back years from now and wish I had done things differently. Therefore, I am taking time away from the game to recalibrate my priorities.”

From Bill Belichick:
“I respect Coach Schiano greatly and appreciate his contributions to our staff and team. He is a friend who we support completely.”

You can’t help but wonder what other things have gone on behind the scenes that we may never know that led to this, but at this point we’ll have to take these statements at their face value.

Here at Buckeyes Wire, we wish Schiano well in his future endeavors.
