Former NT Police officer set to plead guilty on gun, drug charges

Former NT Police officer Daniel Keelan outside Darwin's local court yesterday.

A former Northern Territory police officer is planning to plead guilty to drugs and firearms offences in the new year, his lawyer has told Darwin Local Court.

Daniel Keelan, 43, was a serving officer when he was arrested and charged in September this year with a range of drug supply and possession offences, stealing, and having an unlicenced firearm.

He was kept in custody for two days after the arrest but has been free on bail since then.

In Darwin Local Court yesterday, his lawyer, Peter Maley, advised his client was "looking to resolve" the matters and would be entering a guilty plea next year.

"My client will be pleading guilty in the Supreme Court, and I ask that he is given full credit for an early guilty plea," Mr Maley told the court.

Judge John Neill ruled the case would be moved to the NT Supreme Court early in the new year.

"I'm satisfied that the evidence is sufficient to put the defendant on his trial … I direct he be tried before the Supreme Court in Darwin," he said.

Mr Keelan, also the A-grade coach of the Palmerston Raiders Rugby Club, was supported in court yesterday by family and friends, including former Labor MP Damien Hale.

At the time of his arrest he was suspended from NT Police without pay, and the matter had been referred to both the NT ICAC and the NT Ombudsman for separate investigation.

NT Police confirmed on Wednesday afternoon Mr Keelan has since resigned from the force.

The matter will next be heard in the NT Supreme Court on January 14, 2021.
