Former NRL player Masada Iosefa has died in a quad bike accident in rural Darwin.

NT Police said the former Penrith Panthers and Wests Tigers hooker was involved in a single-vehicle crash on Mckinlay Road in the suburb of Herbert last night.

A passer-by discovered the crash scene a little before 9:00pm and reported it to police who arrived shortly after.

Major Crash detectives investigating the crash said initial investigations indicated the 32-year-old died collided with a guard rail and rolled the bike after failing to successfully negotiate a bend.

NT Police said he was not wearing a helmet.

In a post on social media, former teammate Frank Pritchard remembered Mr Iosefa's "tough-as-nails" spirit.

"Words can't describe how I'm feeling right now," he said.

"Tough as nails, always went hard without any preservation for his body. Never took a step back to any situation.

"Always had my back from the get go. May you fly high now … until we meet again."

In a statement on Twitter, the Penrith Panthers paid tribute to the former player.

"Our thoughts are with Masada's family and friends," the club said.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.
