Former Notts County youngster banned from the roads after drink driving in his mum's car

A former Notts County youngster has been banned from driving after taking his mum's car to search for his stolen bike.

Yassin Mounir was spotted by a police officer because he was driving so slowly in a 30mph limit, the city's magistrates' court heard.

The incident happened at 1.50am on Cinderhill Road on April 19 and he was pulled over, said Stephen Flint, prosecuting.

"An officer was on mobile patrol and saw another car driving at 10 to 15mph in a 30 limit. The car was swerving and being driven erratically.

"The defendant smelt of alcohol, he was unsteady on his feet and slurring his words. He was calm and quiet and fully complied with the breath test procedure," added Mr Flint.

Jo Chadd, mitigating, said 19-year-old Mounir, of Eskdale Drive, Aspley, is "a socially vulnerable young man".

She told the court: "He used to play football and was on the books of Notts County but had difficulties and left Notts County.

"He used his bike to develop skills. He describes it as his life. The bike was stolen and he was extremely distressed.

"His mother was asleep and he took his mother's car and was driving around looking for the bike. That is when he was pulled over by the police.

"He is extremely sorry and has said repeatedly this will not happen again."

Mounir is currently at college "working on his English and maths skills" and has no income, added Miss Chadd.

Mounir was banned from driving for a year but this will be reduced by three months if he completes a course on the perils of drink driving. He admitted driving with 40 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, five over the legal limit.

He also pleaded guilty to driving without insurance and in breach of the terms of his driving licence. He was fined £120 and must pay £85 prosecution costs as well as a government surcharge of £30.
