Former Notts County manager quits Championship role for Oxford United

Former Notts County manager Craig Short has left Derby County's youth set-up to take a first-team coaching role at Oxford United.

The former Magpies defender, who was in charge at Meadow Lane in 2010, has been with the Rams since 2016 and was the Assistant Senior Professional Development Phase Coach.

The 52-year-old did an excellent job in his time at Derby's academy which has cultivated several young stars who have broken into the first-team squad under boss Phillip Cocu.

And he will now hope for similar success at Oxford where his brother Chris is the head of physical performance.

He said: "It was just the feedback I was getting from Chris all the time.

"It was nice that time I came in to do my CPD (Continuing Professional Development) and I had a good feel for it.

"It was still a difficult call to make to my old boss Darren Wassall, because we have a good relationship and it's a secure job.

"But then you look at this club and it's a young squad and Karl is developing them.

"I know one or two have gone on to a higher level but you've still been competitive."

In a message to Short on their website Derby said: "Derby would like to wish Craig every success in his new role with Oxford and thank him for his efforts throughout his time with the club, both as a player and for his contribution to the club’s Academy development."
