Former Notts County director Sven-Goran Eriksson chasing Scotland job

Former Notts County technical director and England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has contacted the SFA to express his interest in succeeding Alex McLeish as Scotland manager.

McLeish was sacked last month after his side got their qualification campaign for Euro 2020 off to the world start imaginable - beaten 3-0 by Kazakhstan, a side ranked 116th in world football.

SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell, Scottish Professional Football League's Neil Doncaster and SFA vice-president Rod Petrie have all met at Hampden Park to narrow down their search for a new manager.

The shortlist so far is believed to consist of Sunderland manager Jack Ross, Kilmarnock boss Steve Clarke, Derek McInnes of Aberdeen and Scotland's Under-21s manager Scott Gemmill, but experienced Eriksson, who was England's first ever foreign manager, is reported by the Daily Record to have now thrown his hat into the ring.

While the 71-year-old may boast an impressive list of clubs on his CV, in recent years he has been in the football's wilderness.

Since leaving Leicester City back in 2011, and after a two-year break from management, the Swede has earned big money managing in China and in 2018 took over as manager of the Philippines where he is currently working as a consultant.

Eriksson's time at Meadow Lane was just as short lived.

After taking over as technical director in 2009, persuaded by promises to take Notts to the Premier League by Middle Eastern owners Munto Finance, Eriksson left after just seven months, publicly turning down a hefty payoff to save the club from financial ruin.
