Former Nottinghamshire miner who died found with 'significant' wound to his head

An inquest has taken place surrounding the circumstances of how a former Nottinghamshire miner died.

John Henry Dawes died at the age of 84.

Mr Dawes had worked underground at the Silverhill Colliery, in Stanton Hill.

He lived in Kirkby-in-Ashfield and was also a carer.

Mr Dawes' death was referred to assistant coroner Laurinda Bower last October.

She held an inquest at Nottingham Council House on Monday (January 20) to try to establish how he died.

Ms Bower said Mr Dawes was found with a 'significant' wound to the back of his head, and that "he had perhaps fallen over".

However, she said there was "no skull fracture present".

Ms Bower said the death was linked to a lung disease called simple coal workers' pneumoconiosis.

She said: "The conclusion of Mr Dawes' death is one of industrial disease."

He died at his home. No family members were present at the hearing on Monday afternoon.
