Former Nottingham Forest striker links up with ex-Notts County boss as he returns home

Former Nottingham Forest striker Daryl Murphy has returned to his hometown club Waterford.

Murphy’s contract at the City Ground was cancelled last summer following a two-year spell in which he scored 13 goals in 60 appearances.

Now, after a season with Bolton Wanderers in League One, he has returned home to League of Ireland side Waterford.

There, he links up with former Notts County boss John Sheridan, who managed the Magpies for half of the 2016-17 season before he was sacked following a club record nine-match losing streak.

Murphy, now 37, last played for Waterford 15 years ago, leaving his hometown for a career in England that saw him score goals at Sunderland, Celtic, Ipswich and Newcastle before he joined Forest in 2017.

In his second season at the City Ground, he was banned for six weeks for testing positive for cocaine.

After Sabri Lamouchi arrived, Murphy’s time with the Reds ended, with his contract terminated in September last year.

He then spent last season with Bolton, scoring eight goals in 26 outings as they were relegated to League Two.
