Former Nottingham Forest striker Ben Brereton has been called up to the Chile national team for the first time.
The Blackburn Rovers forward, whose mother is Chilean, has been included in the squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Bolivia.
Brereton represented England at youth level during his time at the City Ground, but is said to have been on Chile’s radar for some time and has now pledged his international allegiance to the country where his mother was born.
He will hope to win his first cap for La Roja next month, when they face Argentina in Santiago del Estero on Thursday, June 3, followed by a home clash with Bolivia in Santiago on Tuesday, June 8.
The 22-year-old could also yet be involved in the rearranged Copa America, which takes place in Argentina in June and July, with the current group named only for the World Cup qualifiers.
Brereton has previously said: "I’m half Chilean. My mum is from Chile and my dad is from England, so I am half Chilean.
“The lads didn’t believe me, but my mum came over to England when she was young and ended up with my dad.
"I’ve been when I was younger but I can’t really remember it. I have family over there so it would be good to see the place. My grandparents are over here now, but I have other family members over there."
Brereton left the Reds for Rovers in January 2019, having initially made the move on loan.
Chile are sixth in the 10-team table in the South American section of World Cup qualification, having won one, drawn one and lost two in their fixtures so far.
