Former Nottingham Forest man joins Championship rivals after City Ground exit

Former Nottingham Forest defender Michael Hefele has returned to Huddersfield Town to take up a new backroom role with the Terriers.

The German was allowed to leave by the Reds at the end of his contract this summer, having fallen well down the pecking order at the City Ground.

Since joining Forest from Huddersfield Town in the summer of 2018, Hefele has made just 18 appearances due to injuries and falling out of favour.

His last competitive outing in the Garibaldi was a 4-2 victory over Leeds United in January 2019 - Aitor Karanka was in charge of the Reds at the time.

He announced his retirement on Sunday (July 25), stating "medical reasons" meant he was having to hang up his boots.

But the 30-year-old has secured a new role in football having taken on a newly created position behind the scenes at Huddersfield Town, returning to the club with which he helped achieve promotion to the Premier League in 2017.

He will now be responsible for growing support for the Terriers' community initiatives as well as working alongside the commercial team on match days and non-match days.

Hefele, who will also assist in coaching the academy, said: "This position gives me the chance to develop myself.

"I will progress my coaching badges, my sporting director course and get an overview of the entire club, inside and out.

"I want to get a feeling on how everything is run and start from scratch on the non-playing side of football."

Huddersfield Town chairman Phil Hodgkinson added: "His (Hefele's) love for Town hasn't waned in his three years away, and we've kept in contact throughout.

"He jumped at this chance to return to the club in an ambassadorial role, and he's determined to play a big part in helping us grow and move forward."
