Former Nottingham Forest favourite leaves Championship rivals - and some Reds fans want him back

Former Nottingham Forest defender Eric Lichaj will play no further part for Hull City this season, after it was announced he will leave the club.

The American, who was something of a fans’ favourite during his time at the City Ground, will become a free agent when his contract with the Tigers expires at the end of this month.

He was one of four players who have failed to agree new deals and will be released by Hull, along with Jackson Irvine, Stephen Kingsley and Marcus Maddison.

Lichaj turned down the opportunity to sign an extended contract that would cover the final nine games of the campaign, with the Championship getting back underway this weekend.

And he said on Twitter: “It has been a pleasure and honour to play for @HullCity. Thank you for making me and my family feel welcome. All the best to the boys for the rest of the season.”

With the news of Lichaj’s availability, some Forest fans hinted they wouldn’t mind seeing him back on the banks of the Trent.

The full-back’s departure, in particular, will come as a blow for City as they battle to avoid relegation.

Lichaj had made the move to the KCOM Stadium two years ago after leaving the Reds and had served as captain this season.

He made 70 appearances in total for the Tigers, including 30 this season.

Boss Grant McCann said of the departing quartet: “It’s always a tough decision to let lads go who have helped the club on and off the field but all the decisions are made in the best interests of the football club.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the players who will be leaving us for the contributions they have made to Hull City and we wish them all the best for the future.

“Ultimately, at this stage of the season, we only want players that are fully committed to the club’s cause and our focus is firmly on working with the group that remains ahead of the last nine games.

“The confidence in the camp has been clear for all to see since we returned to training and everyone is looking forward to returning to action against Charlton at the weekend.”
