Former Nottingham Forest favourite Ben Watson handed chance to extend career

Former Nottingham Forest captain Ben Watson will get the chance to extend his career with Charlton Athletic.

The 35-year-old has been offered a new deal by the League One club, along with Ben Amos, Chuks Aneke, Jake Forster-Caskey, Adam Matthews and Jason Pearce.

Charlton manager Nigel Adkins added: “Our job is about building a squad that puts us in the best position for the 2021-22 season.

“We finished the season well and have a core of good, hungry players, so I’m looking forward to seeing how we can progress over the next few weeks.”

The fact Charlton say they are in talks to keep Watson muddies the water a little as Adkins' predecessor Lee Bowyer suggested the player had appeared enough times to trigger a clause in his contract.

Asked about the former Crystal Palace player’s future in March, Bowyer said: “I think he will be here next season. I’m sure that he’s played enough now to trigger that [clause]. Ben has been good for us.”

Former Crystal Palace and Watford midfielder Watson has played 30 times for Charlton since joining last September.

He joined Forest in 2018 and played a leading role as Forest painfully missed out on the play-offs in the 2019/20 season, featuring 45 times as he skippered Sabri Lamouchi's team.
