Former Nottingham Forest defender lands deal with League One side

Former Nottingham Forest defender Michael Mancienne has a new club after joining League One Burton Albion for the rest of the season.

The 33-year-old, who had a four-year spell at the City Ground before joining MLS side New England Revolution in 2018, has recently been training with Lincoln City, where brother-in-law and fellow former Forest player, Jorge Grant, plays.

However, with the Imps well-stocked for central defenders, that was only an informal arrangement.

Mancienne has now linked up with improving Burton, where former Chelsea and Leeds United striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has recently returned for a second stint as manager.

“We’ve been looking for a centre back throughout the whole of the transfer window," said Hasselbaink.

“He has lots of experience and has played lots of games in higher leagues.

“I’m very happy that he is signing with us.”

Despite being bottom of the table, Burton have improved under Hasselbaink and defeated high-flying Hull City 1-0 at the weekend.

Mancienne said: “It's obviously a pleasure to be here and I'm really grateful that the manager has given me the opportunity to join and help with the battle.

"I know how to see out games and what the team has to do to win games, so I hope to bring that experience with me."
