Former Nottingham Forest defender gives transfer verdict as Reds boss provides injury update

Defender Scott McKenna will miss a fourth successive game for Nottingham Forest as he remains sidelined with an ankle injury.

Boss Chris Hughton has ruled the centre-back out of Saturday’s trip to Millwall, but he is still left with something of a selection dilemma.

Tobias Figueiredo and Anthony Knockaert are available again after serving one-match suspensions.

However, Loic Mbe Soh, alongside Joe Worrall in the back line, and winger Alex Mighten both put in impressive performances on rare starts in midweek, helping the Reds end a seven-match winless run.

Garry Birtles and Gregor Robertson debate how Nottingham Forest have been run

Swan flying

Academy graduate Will Swan hopes signing a new long-term contract at Nottingham Forest is just the start for him, amid what has been a memorable few weeks.

Having been in flying form for the Reds’ Under-23s, the 20-year-old was called up to the first-team squad by boss Chris Hughton and made his senior debut last month, when he came off the bench against Swansea City.

He has been a part of the matchday squad since then, with another appearance against Reading - and last week penned fresh terms until 2024, as the icing on the cake.

Now Swan is eager to kick on, and says he would consider another temporary transfer it helped his development.

Transfer verdict

Former Nottingham Forest defender Gregor Robertson says Chris Hughton should look to lower the average age and in turn increase the desire of his squad in the January transfer window.

Speaking on this week's Garibaldi Red podcast, Robertson, who is now a reporter for The Times, questioned if a squad full of experienced players has the necessary hunger to succeed.

"I would suggest he might want to look at the average age a little bit. If I were him, which I'm not, I'd try to sign the best players at clubs lower down than Forest," Robertson said.

"It's a big opportunity for them and they'll have something to prove. They'll want to either really impress at a big club in the Championship or get to the Premier League.

Arvin Appiah in action for Forest (Dan Westwell)

On the move

Former Nottingham Forest youngster Arvin Appiah is reportedly set for a January transfer, little more than a year after leaving the City Ground.

The 19-year-old left the Reds for Almeria in the summer of 2019, but has struggled to make an impact and could now be headed for a move elsewhere.

Having come up through the ranks at the Nigel Doughty Academy, Appiah was said to have been on the radar of Manchester United before joining the Spanish second division side in a deal worth around £8m.

He was initially registered for the club’s reserve team and has found game time limited, with injury problems also hampering him.
