Former Nottingham Forest defender announces decision to retire

Former Nottingham Forest defender Michael Mancienne has decided to hang up his boots after a career spanning close to two decades.

The 35-year-old has spent the past two years with Burton Albion. But he will leave the League One club this summer when his contract expires, and he has announced his decision to retire.

Announcing their retained list, the Brewers said: “Michael Mancienne has called time on his career and has decided to retire following nearly 18 years in the professional game.”

Mancienne spent four years at the City Ground before leaving for MLS outfit New England Revolution in 2018. During his time with the Reds he made 125 league appearances.

A former Chelsea youth prospect, he also had spells with QPR, Wolverhampton Wanderers and German side Hamburger. After leaving America, he joined Burton in February 2021 - having initially trained with Lincoln City, where his brother-in-law and fellow ex-Forest player Jorge Grant was on the books at the time.

Mancienne featured 40 times in the league for the Brewers during his time at the club. In the 2022/23 campaign, however, he featured just twice. His last game was as a substitute in a 2-1 victory away to Forest Green Rovers last December.

Fellow former Red Mustapha Carayol was among his teammates at the Pirelli Stadium. His deal is also coming to an end, but Albion are eager to retain his services.

Carayol is one of eight players to be offered fresh terms. The club say manager Dino Maamria “hopes to retain their services”.
