Former Nottingham Forest caretaker appointed manager as club are taken over

Former Nottingham Forest coach John Pemberton has kept his job at Chesterfield amid the club’s takeover.

Pemberton spent a decade at the City Ground as part of the coaching team and he masterminded the famous FA Cup upset against Manchester City as caretaker boss in 2009.

Since leaving the Reds that same year, he has spent time coaching Crystal Palace, Sheffield United, and Bristol City, before taking the reins at National League side Chesterfield earlier this year.

Manager’s positions usually come under threat when a takeover goes through but after the Chesterfield FC Community Trust used £500,000 loans from Chesterfield Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council to buy the Spireites, new chairman Mike Goodwin confirmed Pemberton would keep his job.

The 55-year-old took the reins on a caretaker basis in January after John Sheridan was sacked, and was appointed as permanent boss in February.

In his nine games in charge, Pemberton has clinched five wins to earn 17 points from a possible 27 to guide Chesterfield clear of the relegation zone before the campaign was curtailed.
