Former Nottingham Forest boss 'visibly caught the attention' for surprise international job

Former Nottingham Forest boss Sabri Lamouchi has been linked with a new job - at international level.

The Frenchman has been out of work since leaving Qatari club Al Duhail in August, and is recently said to have been on the radar of Belgian outfit Standard Liege.

That job ended up going to Luka Elsner, but Lamouchi has now reportedly caught the eye of the Mauritania national side.

The African country are looking for a replacement for Corentin Martins, who was axed after failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.

According to Afrik Foot, the ex-Reds boss’ “profile has visibly caught the attention of Mauritanian leaders”.

Any chance of him being appointed will likely be in the future, however, as Gerard Buscher has taken charge as interim coach.

Buscher will take the team for matches against Zambia and Equatorial Guinea next month, as the search goes on for a permanent successor to Martins.

Afrik Foot say: “Recall that the names of Sabri Lamouchi, Mehdi Nafti and Nabil Maâloul have circulated in recent weeks to take over the selection.”

They add the national association “obviously wants to give itself time to make the right choice” ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations next year.

Mauritania are in a group with Tunisia, Mali and Gambia.

Lamouchi was axed from his role at the City Ground 12 months ago, having overseen a final day collapse which saw the Reds miss out on the play-offs, followed by a dismal start to the 2020/21 season.

He went on to join Al Duhail, but his contract was terminated by “mutual consent” this summer.

He has previously managed the Ivory Coast national team.
