Former Nottingham Forest boss Steve McClaren on his 'inspirations' as he eyes next job

Former Nottingham Forest boss Steve McClaren says he takes “inspiration” from the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and Roy Hodgson as he eyes a return to the game.

The 59-year-old has been out of work since being axed by QPR in April 2019, but he remains keen to use his “experience”.

McClaren says he looks at managerial greats such as Manchester United legend Ferguson, having had a spell as his assistant at Old Trafford, and Roy Hodgson, who is in charge of Crystal Palace at the age of 72, and feels he still has something to offer.

Asked what is next for him, he said in a Facebook Live Q&A with Experience Epic Ltd: "I take inspiration from managers I worked for.

"Jim (Smith) was 58 when he took over at Derby and, he says, had seven of his best years in football from 58 to 65.

“Sir Alex was 57 or 58 when he was going to retire, changed his mind, turned around and had an unbelievable successful spell in his sixties and right the way through.

"Sven (Goran Erkisson) was in his sixties when he took over England. Roy Hodgson, I still look at him now and I always remember Don Howe (the former West Bromwich Albion, Arsenal and QPR manager), and he was a great mentor to me.

“The older I have got, and more experienced, I think what are my strengths and what do I love doing - and I love the game.

“I love the tactics of the game, the preparation, the build-up to it, picking a team, changing games, winning games, losing games, coming back from adversity.

"For nearly 30 years that is all I have known.

"I think I am at that stage now where I have to use my experience. I would have been a better manager if I had known 20 years ago what I know now."
