Former Nottingham Forest boss Martin O’Neill linked with Championship return

Former Nottingham Forest player and manager Martin O’Neil has been linked with a swift return to Championship management.

O’Neill was dismissed by Forest just five months into his managerial tenure this summer, reportedly due to suggestions his relationship with senior players had deteriorated.

After guiding the Reds to a 1-0 win over Derby County in February, Forest were firmly in the play-off race, but their end of season form cost them and they faded away from contention.

The announcement of O’Neill’s dismissal was followed minutes later by the appointment of Sabri Lamouchi.

Lamouchi can send the Reds top of the table on Friday night with a win away to Stoke City, showcasing his early season form.

And it is in the Potteries that O’Neill is being linked with a return, according to the bookies.

The Northern Irishman is third favourite in the running for a job with Stoke, should they get rid of under-fire boss Nathan Jones.

Jones has struggled since taking over from Gary Rowett, with Stoke second from bottom in the Championship this season and having picked up just two points from eight games.

Former Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton is favourite.
