Former Nottingham Forest boss in the running for Birmingham City job

Former Nottingham Forest boss Aitor Karanka has been linked with a move to Birmingham City.

Blues boss Pep Clotet announced he would be leaving the club on Monday at the end of the season.

Clotet will oversee Birmingham's final nine Championship matches of the season.

Speaking about his future in a recent interview, Karanka revealed he would be interested in returning to management if the opportunity was correct, with the Spaniard having been out of work since leaving Nottingham Forest in January 2019.

“It’s the same as what I said when I left Middlesbrough, it has to be the right project,” Karanka told Sky Sports.

“Football is moving quick, but I want to be in the right place, the place that trust you, the place you can implement and create something and the place we can enjoy it.

“I’ve had times where my agent will come and say ‘Look, be ready, because maybe something is going to happen.’

“Suddenly that team will start to win games and everything disappears. Sometimes it’s difficult.

“What I am doing is just watching a lot of football, visiting other managers to have chats with them, to organise meetings and things with my staff to improve and to be ready.”

Leading bookmakers SkyBet have the former Forest boss priced as seventh-favourite to succeed Clotet, at 11/1.

Former Birmingham boss Chris Hughton leads the way at 5/2, with Lee Carsley (4/1), Craig Gardner (11/2), Slaviska Jokanovic (6/1), Lee Bowyer (8/1) and Neil Warnock (10/1) ahead of Karanka.

Former Nottingham Forest boss Stuart Pearce also makes the list at 20/1.
