Former Nottingham Forest and Bristol City target reveals why he chose to move to Sheffield Wednesday

Connor Wickham says a meeting with Garry Monk was a big part of why he moved to Sheffield Wednesday in January.

Bristol City had been keen on the Crystal Palace striker, along with Nottingham Forest and French giants Bordeaux, after he found himself down the pecking order at Selhurst Park.

Yet the Robins missed out when Wickham instead chose to move to Wednesday, and the 26-year-old said Owls boss Monk was a big part of that.

"He was massive to be honest," Wickham told the Star."I spoke to him quite a few times and I felt the love from the manager.

"That's what you need, I felt that the manager wanted me, so hopefully I can get on the pitch and repay that faith.

"As soon as I spoke to the manager, I spoke to my dad, I spoke to my agent and said 'we need to make this happen', and thankfully it did."

Wickham only moved to Hillsborough a little under two weeks ago, but he is already looking to his future with the club, and says he is considering turning the loan permanent already.

He said: "I don't think sitting on the bench or sitting in the stand at Crystal Palace is going to make my career go forward.

"I haven't really played for a couple of years, but I've shown little glimpses of what I can do and especially recently I've been focusing on getting myself ready for January and focusing on showing Sheffield Wednesday what I can do again."

After missing out on Wickham, the Robins instead signed Nahki Wells from Burnley, whilst Forest strengthened their front line by recalling Tyler Walker from a loan spell at Lincoln City and signing Julian Larsson and Nuno da Costa.

Wickham played 80 minutes of the Owls' 1-1 draw with Barnsley but failed to find the back of the net.

He previously had a spell at Wednesday in 2013, where he played six games and scored one goal on loan from Sunderland.
