Former Nottingham Forest ace tests positive for coronavirus as EFL row escalates

Woan tests positive

Former Nottingham Forest star Ian Woan is one of six people connected to three Premier League clubs to test positive for coronavirus.

Woan is currently assistant manager at Burnley, who confirmed the 52-year-old was "asymptomatic and is currently safe and well at home".

Top flight teams voted unanimously to step up their return to action at Monday's shareholders meeting, allowing players to train in small, socially-distant session as part of phase one.

Covid-19 tests were conducted across Sunday and Monday as part of the league's partnership with the Prenetics consortium, with the Premier League confirming six individuals have tested positive for the disease.

Hull 'leak' row

Hull City have released a statement stating their disappointment after a letter to the English Football League and Championship clubs was leaked.

It was revealed that Ehab Allam, the club’s vice-chairman, has written to EFL chairman Rick Parry and the 23 rival Championship clubs - including Nottingham Forest - to outline his "serious concerns" over football's return amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Allam said: “I do not presently believe that the 2019/20 season can be safely completed without unnecessarily exposing Championship clubs to potential legal action in the event that one or more of its employees (or their family members) were to become infected with COVID-19.

“As made clear on last week’s conference call, I am against the 2019/20 season being completed under the present circumstances and in light of the wider public health issues facing the United Kingdom at the present time..."

Testing cost

Nottingham Forest will have to pay an estimated £100,000 to test their players for Covid-19 ahead of the Championship’s return, reports have suggested.

The Reds and their Championship rivals can begin group sessions at training grounds from next Monday, but before players can head back, they will have to test negative for the coronavirus.

To carry out the tests, the EFL have, according to the Daily Mail, recruited Leicestershire-based Nationwide Pathology, and not Hong Kong company Prenetics, who have been employed by the Premier League.

Although testing has been organised centrally, clubs will have to pay themselves, with a £100k bill predicted.

Salary cap

Nottingham Forest and the rest of the EFL could be set to face a salary cap as the financial effects of the coronavirus crisis unfold.

The EFL could implement a wage cap sooner than expected as the proposal continues to receive a growing number of support from clubs.

Whilst any format is yet to be formalised, the Independent report that the idea is being discussed at a “very high level”.

“I think salary caps and cost control are absolutely essential," EFL chairman Rick Parry told the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport at the start of May.
