Former Nottingham Forest academy starlet given free transfer by non-league outfit

Nottingham Forest academy graduate Craig Westcarr has been released by non-league outfit Matlock Town.

Westcarr, once heralded as the next big thing when he emerged from the City Ground production line production line in 2001, becoming the youngest player to represent the club at the age of 16, spent much of his career in the lower leagues, before dropping into non-league three years ago.

Last season, Westcarr netted 16 times for Matlock, who operate in the Northern Premier League, but the Gladiators opted to terminate his deal at the end of the campaign following the appointment of new manager Steve Kittrick, who doesn’t have the 34-year-old in his plans.

“It was decided to terminate Craig’s contract in the best interests of everyone” said Town chairman Tom Wright.

Westcarr played just 23 times for Forest after making his debut in October 2001, replacing David Johnson in a 1-0 win over Burnley.

His first goal in senior football came in a 2-2 draw for Forest at Rotherham’s Millmoor.

After his departure from Forest in 2005, Westcarr went to Cambridge United, and also enjoyed spells at Notts County, Mansfield Town, Walsall, Portsmouth and Alfreton Town among others.

He’s also represented England at Under-15, 16, 17, 18 and 21 levels.
