Former Northern Ireland defender James McPake named new manager of Dundee

Dundee have named former Northern Ireland international James McPake as the club's new manager.

The 34-year-old stepped in on an interim basis after Jim McIntyre was sacked earlier this month.

Dundee went on to finish bottom of the Scottish Premiership and were relegated to the Championship.

Alloa boss Jim Goodwin had been touted as the favourite to land the job on a permanent basis, but now Dundee have announced the appointment of McPake.

Over the course of a 14-year playing career McPake turned out for Livingston, Morton, Coventry City and Hibs, before spending four years at Dundee,

The former defender finished his career at Dens Park, making 55 appearances in his first two seasons.

A serious knee injury in the derby against Dundee United effectively ended his career, and he never made another appearance.

After officially announcing his retirement he took a position within the club’s academy system.

Northern Ireland fans will remember McPake from his brief international career.

Born in Bellshill, Scotland, he qualified for the Green and White Army through his grandfather.

He won his first and only cap in the 6-0 friendly defeat to the Netherlands in June 2012.

McPake will have current Northern Ireland assistant manager Jimmy Nicholl as part of his backroom team. Nicholl has left his role at St Mirren.
