Former newspaper HQ to be turned into Job Centre to deal with covid unemployment surge

A former newspaper office in the city centre is to be turned into a Job Centre to help those made unemployed by the covid pandemic.

The site at 200 Renfield Street was formerly home to The Herald, Glasgow Evening Times, the Herald on Sunday, The National, Sunday National and Scottish Farmer until they vacated last year.

The ground and first floor of the building is set to be used as a Job Centre facility providing employment advice to the public.

It would be part of the Government's initiative to address the economic and employment implications of the pandemic.

As a result, thousands of new work coaches are to be deployed in communities across Scotland. The Government is looking to double the number of coaches to 27,000 by this month with the new Job Centre to help in accomodating this.

The Job Centre would be an appointment-only facility with each member of the public allocated a work coach to help them gain employment.

Planning documents explain: "The proposed change of use is part of a strategic Central Government response to address the employment and economic impacts of the Covid 19 pandemic. The proposed job centre will be one of a large network of new facilities across the UK which the National Government are supporting to assist in enhancing employment opportunities.

"The use will assist in the vibrancy and economic development of the centre and the wider area, as envisaged in the vision and objectives for the City Centre.

"The existing office building is located within a well-established business location centre and is therefore already close to existing development and well-related to the built form of the city centre. The new use will maintain footfall and reasons to visit the centre, with a potential for sustainable linked trips to other retail and service uses in the centre."

The plans are due to go before Glasgow City Council.
