Former Newport passport office transformed into plush, affordable apartments

The former passport office at Olympia House in Newport city centre has been transformed into a plush new 62-apartment complex.

First constructed in the 1960s, the building, which is one of the tallest in the city, has undergone a complete regeneration after it received £1 million in Welsh Government funding - and it's now completely unrecognisable.

The first phase brings six luxury apartments available to buy through Shared Ownership Wales, where 50% of the property can be purchased initially, with the opportunity to increase your share in the property at any time.

One-bedroom apartments - designed with an open plan kitchen and living areas and panoramic views - are available starting at £57,250, and two-bedroom apartments start at £69,750.

The apartments are some of the first purpose-built modern apartments to be completed within the city centre for some time, after the Olympia House regeneration was awarded £1m of Welsh Government funding as part of the Shared Ownership Wales and Rent-to-Own Wales schemes.

Rent-to-Own Wales will allow prospective homeowners to accumulate part of their rent each month to put towards a deposit on the property, a solution for those who have previously been unable to save for a home while renting.

Newport City Homes, which will oversee the running of the apartments alongside Peter Alan, has confirmed that several apartments will be available for rent.

Land and new homes manager at Peter Alan, Michael Edwards, said: “We are hugely excited that Newport City Homes are offering an affordable proposition to buyers in Newport. We look forward to welcoming those who would like more information on how they can acquire a property at Olympia House.”

Head of development at Newport City Homes, Nigel Webb, said: “We are so pleased and excited that we are able to offer the opportunity for the residents of Newport to start their home ownership with us through these exciting and imaginative purchase options.”
