Former Newcastle United star reportedly lined up to succeed Gary Lineker at the BBC

Former Newcastle United midfielder Jermaine Jenas is reportedly being lined up to become Gary Lineker's successor as the face of the BBC's football coverage.

Amid the frenzied coverage of takeover talk at Newcastle and the much talked about arrival of England international defender Danny Rose, talk of Jenas' rise at the BBC crept somewhat under the radar.

But Mail Online claim that senior figures at the BBC have earmarked the former England international as the man to front Match of the Day and the BBC's live football output once Lineker leaves the corporation.

The report states that Lineker is 'not being phased out' but sources have indicated the move could happen in the next two years.

The former Barcelona, Everton and Tottenham forward also currently fronts BT Sport's Champions League coverage and is said to be lined up to front a new ITV quiz show.

Jenas, who spent four years at Newcastle playing under Sir Bobby Robson and Graeme Souness, is the man being lined up to replace him.

The 36-year-old has established himself as one of the corporation's leading pundits and also hosts MOTDX on BBC Two, as well as BBC Radio 5Live's football phone-in on occasion.

Jenas would likely triple his current salary if he was to take over from Lineker but it would be less than the 59-year-old's current £1.75m salary.
