Former Newcastle United star Andy Carroll on brink of being released on a free transfer

Andy Carroll is set to leave West Ham United on a free transfer at the end of the season - according to reports in the capital.

The former Newcastle United man, now 30, has been linked with a return back to St James' Park on numerous occasions since he was sold for £35million to Liverpool in 2011.

Sources at West Ham are suggesting a final decision on Carroll is yet to be made as the club have an option to extend his contract by a further two years.

However, there have been suggestions that Carroll could make a move to Major League Soccer.

The Geordie striker will also be offered to Premier League clubs and Newcastle could get one final chance to sign the striker, who currently earns £90,000 per week.

Carroll had been asked about his future at the start of the year. He said: "Yes, I want to stay and I want a new deal but I can’t really think about that every day.

"I’ve just got to play my football when I get the chance.

"I’ve got a two-year option at the end of the season so we’ll see what happens."

But Carroll's season is now over after he went under the knife to sort out a longstanding ankle injury.
