Former Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton leaves role as Fleetwood Town manager

Joey Barton has left League One side Fleetwood Town with "immediate effect."

At this moment in time there's no indication whether the former Newcastle United midfielder was sacked from the role, or resigned from his position.

The 38-year-old took charge of the Trawlermen in 2018 and finished in the play-offs last season after points-per-game were taken into account.

Barton's side was defeated 6-3 on aggregate by eventual winner Wycombe Wanderers.

This season, the Fishermen sit level on points with the Sunderland having played two more games. They had drawn three of their last four games, against Crewe, Wigan and Portsmouth.

A statement on the clubs official website said: "Fleetwood Town can confirm manager Joey Barton has left the club with immediate effect.

"We would like to thank Joey for his work during his time at Highbury Stadium and wish him success in the future."
