Former Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton sacked by Brighton & Hove Albion

Former Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton has been sacked by Brighton & Hove Albion - despite managing to keep the Seagulls in the Premier League this season.

A run of three victories from 23 was enough for Brighton to decide they needed a new manager for the 2019/20 season.

Hughton, who lost his job at Newcastle back in 2010, took charge for the last time against Manchester City at the Amex Stadium on Sunday.

Brighton supremo Tony Bloom said: "Our run of three wins from 23 Premier League matches put our status at significant risk.

"It is with that in mind, and the performances during that period, that I now feel it's the right time for a change.

"Undoubtedly, this has been one of the most difficult decisions I have had to make as chairman of Brighton, but ultimately one I have made due to how we struggled in the second half of the season."

Hughton still had two years left on his existing deal, and Bloom said: "Chris will always be very fondly remembered by Albion staff and fans as one of our club's finest and most respected managers."
