Former Newcastle United man slams Sunderland-born Premier League referee as 'disgrace'

Former Newcastle United midfielder Dan Gosling has called for Premier League referee Jon Moss to apologise to Bournemouth, accusing him of making disrespectful comments during their defeat to Sheffield United.

Gosling has accused Sunderland-born Moss of belittling the players by talking to them about their relegation battle during Sunday's match, with it reported the Cherries are in talks with the Premier League over Moss' conduct.

The 49-year-old, now based in West Yorkshire, has been an official in the Premier League since 2011 and was refereeing Bournemouth for the first time this season.

He infuriated the South Coast side with his comments though, with Gosling dubbing the experienced official as 'a disgrace' in a vocal outburst.

"The ref didn't help. Giving soft fouls away and little comments to two or three of the lads didn't help as well really," he told the Daily Echo.

"I thought it was very disrespectful what he was saying. It was just the little niggly ones and then the little sarky comments. The officials talk about respect at the start of the season and there was zero respect from Jon Moss on Sunday.

"I thought he was a disgrace. The comments that he made especially to me and one other player – talking about the relegation zone and "you're still in the relegation zone", "you're having one", "your team's having one" this and that and it was very, very disrespectful."

Asked when the comments were made, Gosling added: "During the game, yeah. I think he should really come out and apologise because I thought he was a disgrace."

Moss' alleged comments about Bournemouth being in the relegation zone were incorrect, as the Cherries are currently two points above the drop with Norwich City, Watford and West Ham in the bottom three.
